Grenoble where life is enjoyable

A city accommodated in the hollow of mountains

Situated in the heart of the Alpine mountain range, Grenoble has the particularity of being the capital of the French Alps, but at the same time the flattest city in France.

Historically, Grenoble was very important, as it was the site of the early uprisings of the French Revolution in 1788. Grenoble is also a city rich in art and culture, thanks to its many illustrious sons: Stendhal (Henri Beyle) born in Grenoble in 1783 and author of the famous novel Le Rouge et le Noir, Champollion, decipherer of the Egyptian hieroglyphics and Vaucanson, the inventor of robots, to cite only a few.

There are many facets to Grenoble: it is a highly advanced city with numerous industrial and technological sites: Synchotron and many other research laboratories have been set up here. It also is a university town with 50,000 students, who represent one tenth of Grenoble’s suburb population.

Capital of the Dauphiné - a former province -, Grenoble has an exceptionally fine geographic setting. Close to Switzerland, Italy and the Mediterranean Sea, it offers numerous opportunities for excursions to remarkable sites in the area. In summer as in winter, those fond of sport can enjoy mountain activities: hiking, mountaineering, skiing and snowboarding.

Living in Grenoble also allows to take advantage of the wide range of cultural attractions. There are numerous cinemas, concerts, theatres and museums. The International Museum of Fine Art, inaugurated in January 1994, is one of the richest in the region.

Living in Grenoble provides the opportunity for foreign students to become familiar with the French culture and language in a welcoming, young and dynamic city.
